Did you have a rock collection when you were a kid? We sure did. There’s something seemingly primal about finding new specimens, organizing them by size, shape or color, holding them in your hands and researching their properties. Maybe thats why as grown-ups, we’re so enamored of crystals and gemstones.

There’s a lot to be said about crystal healing, an alternative medicine practice that employs crystals and gemstones for a wide variety of healing and therapeutic properties. Though our personal beliefs in the healing properties of crystals vary, we think that whether or not you adhere to crystal healing, these beautiful stones provide ideal objects upon which to focus positive intentions. Much like filling a space with plants improves the feeling of the space, we find that crystals and gemstones infuse our homes and workspace with positive vibes.

Crystal healing is a fascinating topic, and so much has been written and studied about these bright, lustrous and natural objects across a wide range of crystals and cultures. So allow us to get metaphysical for a moment – here are a few of our current favorite crystals and what they’re said to do!

Crystal Healing: Our 9 Favorite Crystals and What They Do

  1. Quartz Crystal
  2. Zodiac sign: All!
Properties: Quartz is the universal stone, a pure and powerful energy source. It stimulates brain function, making you feel aware, active and alert in all levels of consciousness. A classic crystal for transmitting, storing and amplifying positive energy.
Why we love it: Clear, bright and coming in so many forms (clusters, points, chunks…) quartz is just a classic. Plus, we like that we see it naturally occurring in rock formations in our hikes!

  3. Amethyst
  4. Zodiac sign: Pisces, Virgo, Aquarius and Capricorn
Properties: Amethyst is actually a type of quartz, but with deep purple tips. Legend links this purple color to wine, and Amethyst has long been used to relieve hangovers and cure drunkenness. It also helps one connect to their own spirituality, cuts through illusion, and enhances psychic ability.
Why we love it: That color - seriously! Much like the glass of red wine it supposedly helps you resist, the color of this crystal is simply intoxicating.

  5. Rose Quartz
  6. Zodiac sign: Libra and Taurus
Properties: Rose Quartz has a very fitting name, as this opaque crystal is colored with a delicate pink hue, almost glowing from within. Known as the "love stone," this crystal excels at fortifying relationships, dispelling negativity and creating a calm atmosphere.
Why we love it: This crystal, as the "love stone" makes a super thoughtful gift to a partner or friend. Whether as a wedding gift or even as an apology, this is a great one for all things relationship.

  7. Tiger Eye
  8. Zodiac sign: Capricorn
Properties: This is a gemstone you probably had in your childhood rock collection. Deep amber, striated and naturally lustrous, Tiger Eye is a balancing, grounding stone that supposedly helps the barer maintain and grow their wealth, and helps create awareness and understanding.
Why we love it: Even in its raw or rough, unpolished form, this gemstone shines. It's a nice one to just keep in your pocket to calm and ground you during stressful moments.

  9. Iron Pyrite
  10. Zodiac sign: Leo
Properties: Bright, shiny and golden, it's no wonder Pyrite is nicknamed "fool's gold." But you're no fool for keeping a chunk of Pyrite around; it wards off negative energy and physical danger, while kicking your intellect and memory into high gear.
Why we love it: This crystal just feels otherwordly. Is it metal? Is it stone? So heavy, so shiny, iron Pyrite just feels good in the hand.

  11. Citrine
  12. Zodiac sign: Gemini, Aries, Libra and Leo
Properties: Citrine is our ultimate staff favorite crystal. Not only does this stone dispel negative energy, it never needs to be cleansed, or recharged. Just like its lovely honey or amber color, it's full of warm, optimistic energy. Interestingly the color actually comes from iron, and citrine is a form of quartz crystal.
Why we love it: It's beautiful, it's positive, and it comes in so many different forms, from chunk to point to cluster. Citrine is the crystal we'd take to a desert island if we had to choose only one.

  13. Desert Rose
  14. Zodiac sign: Taurus
Properties: Desert rose is a form of selenite. It brings mental clarity, insight and awareness to its owner, and in meditation, is sometimes used as a way to access past and future lives.
Why we love it: We're fascinated by the round, multifaceted shape of this Selenite form. With its sandy colors marked with bright white crystal formations, it truly does look like a flower from the desert.

  15. Celestine (aka Celestite)
  16. Zodiac sign: Gemini
Properties: Celestine is a calming, balancing crystal. It is a helpful communication aid, and people who use celestine say it helps them remember their dreams. It provides clarity to the mind and peace to the body.
Why we love it: Celestine's sky blue color is cool and inviting. Each piece is totally unique, and its crystal clusters range in size from tiny points to larger outcroppings. It's a bright and exciting crystal.

  17. Raw Emerald
  18. Zodiac sign: Taurus, Gemini and Aries
Properties: One for the lovers - emerald is the stone of "succussful love." It's not surprising, with a color so intoxicating. Promoting focus, eliminating negativity and promoting loyalty and sensativity, this is a stone to carry day in and out.
Why we love it: We saved this one for last, but it's certainly not least. The soft, matte texture of this crystal is capitvating; its pale green and smokey grey color is opaque while somehow inviting you to fall deep inside. This is one to get lost in.

Lovely! Thanks for this beautiful rundown. Though, can I ask, what do the listed zodiac signs signify?

Thanks for the kind words! The zodiac signs listed are the ones that each crystal is best suited for. Meaning, as far as I understand, that the energy of the particular crystal corresponds to the temperaments of the people with that specific zodiac sign, much like birthstones. It’s not to say that you shouldn’t pick up a particular crystal if it doesn’t correspond to your sign, but that there tends to be a positive association between the signs and particular crystals.
