Gifts that Grow: Pistils Nursery Holiday Gift Guide, 2018

For the beginner

Know someone who dreams of keeping plants, but doesn’t know where to start? Get them set up for success with a plant (Scindapsus pictus is a beautiful, versatile and low-maintenance option for plant lovers of all experience levels!) and pot, or go all out and include soil, fertilizer, and a hanger!

For your sweetheart

Say something sweet with a “Heart Fern”,  a beautiful, moisture-loving plant with perfectly heart-shaped, dark green leaves. Throw in a piece of rose quartz (known as the stone of unconditional love) for your darlin’ to keep in their pocket.

For the person who can’t wait for spring

We get it. Long, dreary winters can chip away at even the sunniest disposition. Luckily, there’s a way to gift a little breath of spring. Paperwhites have a luscious floral scent and the sweetest white, star-shaped flowers. In the warmth of the home, bulbs placed in damp pebbles wake up early, growing quickly until they explode into bloom. Makes a great gift for families with small children, as watching the bulbs grow and bloom is a delightful show for nature lovers of all ages.

For the bold

For that person who isn’t afraid of diving right in and getting their hands dirty, consider bringing them into the nursery for a terrarium date! We keep our terrarium bar stocked with sands, stones, lichens, and gemstones to create one-of-a-kind, easy to maintain environments and provide all the tools and instruction you need. We can help as much as you like, fulfilling custom orders that you can pick up in a few days or offering basic lessons and a helping hand for you to do it yourself in the shop. We have tiny plants for every home environment and experience level.

Not able to come into the shop? We also ship small kits with all the components you need to make a terrarium at home.

For the crazy plant person

What do you get the person who seems to already have every plant? An orchid can be a good challenge. This delicate orchid has sprays of tiny, exotic flowers that have a sweet, chocolatey fragrance. We’ve potted it inside the hollowed out trunk of a tree fern for extra tropical flair. Throw in a copy of Loose Leaf, a book full of unique beauty and inspiration for houseplant collectors of the highest caliber.

For the person who keeps telling you that they’re going to give you a cutting…

Know someone with an enviable collection who’s been intimidated by the idea of propagation? Make it simple with one of our favorite books in the shop, Root Nurture Grow, a beautiful and informative guide to propagating all kinds of houseplants. Include a handmade propagation vase for an elegant, practical touch.

For your best friend

If you’re lucky, you have someone in your life who brings out your silly side and makes you laugh until you wish you hadn’t had so much eggnog. Gift them the plant that’s stolen the hearts of plant lovers everywhere, with its cheerful bright green foliage and knack for producing offshoots or “babies” with regularity. Include a super cute hand-thrown “doodle” planter by one of our favorite makers, Sissy Moon.

For the dedicated plant parent

Have a friend who always seems to be so busy taking care of everybody else (including their plants) that they forget to treat themselves? Help turn their watering routine into a sumptuous self-care ritual with a brass watering can and mister built to last.

For the gardener

If you know someone who’d just about always rather be outside digging in the dirt, gift them a hori-hori knife, an endlessly useful Japanese tool with a carbon steel blade. This tool is a real game-changer when it comes to weeding and digging, trust us. Include Lessons from the Great Gardeners and your friend will be in good company.

For your family

Our handmade black walnut flower presses are built to become family heirlooms and sweetly suggest a lifetime of moments spent in nature together. Immortalize special occasion arrangements and wildflowers alike.

For the homebody

We all know the person (or perhaps you are the person…) who likes to spend the winter curled up at home with a cup of tea and a good book. Keep them cozy with a beautiful handmade mug, some Palo Santo incense, and a book full of macrame projects perfect for a cozy chair.

We hope you find some inspiration in these gifts that grow! Wishing you all a warm, festive and healthy holiday season.
