Dorstenia sp. - Shield Flower
This Dorstenia hybrid is a caudiciform related to the well-known genus Ficus. The plant is grown for its unusually shaped caudex and otherwordly, flower-like growths called pseudoanthiums (Greek for "false flower") . The flowers and the stubby caudex make an adorable addition to any plant collection.
Dorstenia, like many other caudiciforms, experiences a winter dormancy period. Its caudex--or swollen, woody stem--stores energy and water so it can survive a dry winter without needing much (if any) water.
PLANT CARE
• Light: Bright, indirect light
• Water: Water when soil approaches dryness during its growing season
• Considerations: Keep plant dry during its winter dormancy. Only water if the caudex starts to shrivel. Resume watering when plant shows new growth.
