Fockea edulis
Related to Hoya, Matelea, Pachypodium, Huernia, and other plants in Apocynaceae, Fockea edulis is a caudiciform from Southern Africa that grows long, deciduous vines covered in small, shiny leaves. The medium-green leaves have wavy margins that make this plant even more attractive.
Historically, this plant's root was used as a food and water source by people living in the harsh deserts of Southern Africa, but we don't recommend ingesting any part of this plant, as a labor-intensive process is needed to make the caudex safe for consumption.
PLANT CARE
• Light: Bright light, some direct light okay. Protect the exposed caudex from harsh midday sun.
• Water: Water when soil is completely dry. Water less frequently in the winter.
• Considerations: This plant often goes dormant during the winter, dropping its leaves and tendril-like vines. Be careful not to overwater, but if the caudex becomes shriveled or slightly soft, the plant is thirsty.
